One of the main reservoirs of the infection appeared to be rats. Bacteria can enter dog ‘s system through break in the skin or when dog drinks water or eats food contaminated by infected urine.
Signs of leptospirosis appear within 5-15 days. There is a fever in early stages of this disease. It is accompanied by
loss of appetite, mental depression and listlessness. . Leptospirosis affects primarily the kidneys. These symptoms include a “ hunched up “ appearance, because of the pain in the kidneys. There are also other symptoms such as
ulcers on the mucus membranes of the mouth and tongue, thick brown coating on the tongue, bleeding from the mouth, severe thirst with increased urination, passing of bloody feces. If there is a liver involved, the white of the eyes will turn yellow. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea are commonly present and dog has difficulty eating and swallowing because of the sores in the mouth.
